Topic: In 1931, nine young African American men were arrested in Northern Alabama when two white women accused them of raping them on the train. Harper Lee was a child when this notorious series of trials took place, and many scholars feel she used this as a model for the trial of Tom Robinson. Compare the events of the two trials, and determine if the novel may have used the Scottsboro Trials as its model. You may also choose to look at other trials or events similar in content. For more sources, you can go to http://library.thinkquest.org/12111 and search for connections to the Tom Robinson Trial and the Scottsboro Trials. The transcripts of the trial are available here, and if you go to the pbs site you can get the entire video transcript of Scottsboro: An American Experience as well as other articles.
